UROLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY

Glossary of urological diseases and terms

TESTICLE PAIN

Testicle pain is a common male problem. It may be a symptom of an infectious disease or testicular cancer which is most serious in young men. Examination of a patient and assessment of testicular size and tenderness is crucial for diagnosis. Next, a scrotal ultrasound should be performed as it shows structures located in the scrotum. The next step to help patients suffering from an infection of the epididymis is to carry out additional tests such as urine culture and urethral discharge culture to identify the bacteria and treat the infection effectively. Do not forget to examine your testicles once a week. Only you can detect testicular cancer early. If you have any doubts, see a urologist.

BPH – BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA – A GENTLY OVERALL PROSTATE

BPH is a disease afflicting men older than 50 years, causing a weak urine stream and frequent urination at night. It is characterised by an overactive bladder. BPH causes uncontrolled contractions of bladder muscles leading to frequent urination, sometimes up to 30 times a day.

UROLITHIASIS

The main challenge of every urology. A common disease in the modern world. Suddenly it hurts. Ailments radiate to the groin. Blood may appear in the urine. Small and sometimes large stones can cause pain. Small stones up to 5 mm can be expelled outside of our body using medication. Bigger stones are a challenge. The most important is the ultrasound examination which allows you to assess the size of the stone, its location. Radiological examinations such as abdominal X-ray or computed tomography are often performed. Dear Patient Remember: untreated urolithiasis can damage your kidneys and they are to serve you for the rest of your life.

RENAL COLIC

Renal colic is characterised by lower back pain which often radiates to the groin area. Blood in urine can be observed. It is most commonly caused by urolithiasis, but other causes include infections and low back pain.

BLOOD IN URINE — HAEMATURIA

Haematuria is a very disturbing symptom that can conceal cancer. A patient requires further diagnosis. An ultrasound of the urinary tract is the easiest test. A patient should drink 1.5 l of mineral water 30 minutes prior to the examination to fill the bladder with urine. If you notice blood in your urine, see a urologist.

PREMATURE EJACULATION

There is a specific definition of premature ejaculation: if ejaculation occurs before penetration or within the first minute after insertion, premature ejaculation can be diagnosed. Urology is a branch of medicine that can help patients facing the above mentioned problem.

TESTICULAR CANCER

The first symptom of testicular cancer is painless testicular enlargement. It is one of the most common and dangerous diseases in young men. The peak of incidence occurs in the third decade of life. Painless testicular enlargement is the most common presenting symptom. During a consultation, a urologist will examine the scrotum, perform an ultrasound scan and refer a patient to laboratory tests. Do not forget to examine your testicles once a week. Only you can detect testicular cancer early. If you have any doubts, see a urologist.

PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It is asymptomatic at an early stage. If your father or grandfather had prostate cancer and you are 40-45, see a urologist who will refer you, after examination, to specialised tests that will help detect cancer at an early stage when the cure rate is 99 percent.

PHIMOSIS, SHORT FRENULUM

If you cannot retract the foreskin over the glans penis before, during and/or after erection, you are most probably suffering from phimosis. The only possible treatment is a plastic surgery of the foreskin or circumcision. You should see a urologist. If you are a mother of a son under the age of 3, you are encouraged to try treatment with ointments or creams. Please see a urologist who will be able to help.

EPIDIDYMITIS

Epididymitis is characterised by sudden pain in the testicle area with or without fever. Untreated epididymitis may lead to loss of the testicle or sterility.

CYSTITIS — PAINFUL URINATION

Cystitis is an infection of the lower urinary tract. The disease affects both women and men alike, but occurs at a higher frequency in women. It begins inconspicuously with a burning and stinging sensation. Next, a frequent need to urinate can be observed. Blood in the urine may occur periodically. A kidney and bladder ultrasound will be performed during a consultation with a urologist. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of the bladder, it has to be filled with urine. A patient should drink 1.5 l of still mineral water 30 minutes prior to the examination. After the ultrasound, a urine culture and urethral discharge culture should be performed to identify the bacteria causing the disease. In some cases, e.g. high fever, your urologist will prescribe an antibiotic that can be modified according to the test results. Patients should remember to drink at least 2 litres of still water a day during treatment. It will help flush the urinary tract clean.

PROSTATE INFLAMMATION

Inflammation of the prostate gland is one of the most difficult problems of contemporary urology. If you are a young man who gets up at least once during the night to go to the toilet, has a narrow urine stream, has to urinate again shortly after urinating in the morning or does not experience any of the above, but suffers from pain or discomfort between the testicles and the anus, you may be suffering from chronic prostate inflammation. During a consultation, it is necessary to examine the prostate by performing a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) as well as a urinary tract and prostate ultrasound to rule out infection. If you are a young man and have any of the symptoms listed above, see a urologist immediately.
